Success Report (previous issues)
My five year old daughter came into the house with her swimsuit on and proudly announced, “Wendy told me we could come over swimming.” Wendy is our next door neighbor and I was curious how Lydia got this special invitation. I said to my youngest daughter, “Oh, did you see her when she was walking on the road?” Lydia said, “Nope.” “Oh, did they walk through the woods to see to you?” Again, Lydia said, “Nope.” I said, “Lydia, you didn’t go over there and knock on their door did you?” She said, “Oh no, I didn’t knock. I rang the door bell.”
My five year old daughter would be a millionaire if she owned her own business because she knows the secret. What’s the secret? She knew what she wanted and she was determined to get it!
So often we don’t know what we want from our businesses…..no dreams, ambitions, or goals. On the other hand, if we do know what we want, we’re not real determined to get it. Which category do you fall into? These are two of the most important ingredients for success in business: knowing what you want and having the desire to go for it……and you can’t have one without the other.
Let me walk you through an exercise that may help you. Tell me what small dream you would like to achieve in one year or less? Before you answer, I have to tell you that it MUST be something that will cost you money. Let’s face it, most dreams cost money. Don’t get mixed up and say you’d like to have 10 recruits within a year. Does that cost you money? I don’t want you to put down the vehicle that will get you to reach your dream. I want you to write down your dream. Would you like to buy something for your house, get out of debt, travel, get a new wardrobe for yourself…..what is it? What do you want?
Now that you’ve written down your one year dream, do you REALLY want it? Do you get a sense of urgency when you think about it? Do you have a desire that would cause you to walk through the woods and knock on your neighbor’s door to get what you want? Are you willing to do whatever it takes…..make those phone calls, schedule those recruiting interviews, and then make more phone calls? If you’re not willing to do what it takes, then my advice to you is to think long and hard about that one year dream. You need to change it and get something that will drive you.
When I’m recruiting I always look for people who have desire. I will pass over people who are talented and have a lot of skills for someone who has neither of those things but has a whole lot of desire. Guess which one will go to the top of the comp plan? You bet……the one with DESIRE!
On a scale from 1 to 10 (10 being you’re full of desire and drive), where are you? Why are you there? Are you letting fears stop you from being successful? Are you letting mediocrity rule your life? Are you surrounding yourself with negative people who are holding you back? Are you procrastinating?
It’s time to break out of those limiting situations by getting really clear on what you want to achieve in one year or less. Let it drive you. Let it give you a sense of urgency. Become unstoppable.
We can learn a lot from my five year old daughter, Lydia……she knew what she wanted and she was determined to do whatever it took to get it. How about you?
To you and your dreams!
