Success Report (previous issues)
My nine year old daughter, Hannah, sat down a couple of months ago to sew a project given to her by her sewing teacher. She must have worked for about five minutes when all of a sudden I heard the wailing and gnashing of teeth----a sure sign that something was not going right! Walking into the room, my daughter unleashed 5,000 words per minute in a tone that could be heard above the loudest roar of a jet airliner. “I just sewed the whole side of this material and I didn’t know my bobbin thread ran out at the beginning,” she said.
For those of you who have never experienced the joys of sewing, running out of bobbin thread and not catching it right away can be translated to one word----FRUSTRATION! I could definitely empathize with Hannah and her situation. When I was twelve, I remember trying to teach myself how to sew. My project was a shirt. I was on a roll until I tried it on and found I had sewn both arm holes shut. Boy was I ever frustrated---so frustrated that shirt became my dust rag. It was my way of punishing it!
As I looked at Hannah I knew this was an incredible life lesson for me to use in teaching her some basic concepts about running a business. I said Hannah, “I know this is frustrating, but it’s a cheap lesson for you to learn right now at the age of nine. Do you know why?” She shook her head no. I said, “Everyday your Daddy and I see adults sewing their projects without thread. The sad part is they waste their time doing it day after day after day.” I continued to explain, “People who run home-based businesses have a tendency to focus on the wrong activities to build their businesses. Sure, they’re busy, and to them it seems like they’re accomplishing a lot. The fact of the matter is they’re not accomplishing anything. They’re focusing on the activities that will not bring them results----and that’s like sewing without thread.”
How about you? Are you sewing without thread? Are you so busy organizing that you’re putting off making your phone calls each workday? Are you so busy creating training materials that you’re not training your rising stars? Are you so busy planning for your holiday open house that you’re neglecting to make phone calls to invite the people?
Before each activity you do for your business, one question should be answered: how is this going to bring me sales, recruits, and leaders? For example, if you spend a whole week planning a holiday open house but you don’t get on the phone and call your guests at least one week prior to your open house, all of your labors will be fruitless. If you spend days making lists of potential recruits but don’t call them right away to take them through an interview, why bother making lists?
The great thing about this business is growing and developing yourself. You can make changes immediately in the activities that you’re focused on. And I promise if you focus on business building activities (sales, recruits, and developing leaders) you will be creating a masterpiece---because you’ve chosen to sew with thread!
Until next time---keep sewing with thread!
